Dr. Betty Martinez

Dr. Betty Martinez, 60, of New Orleans, Louisiana passed away Sunday, September 20, 2015 in Cape Coral, Florida. She was born November 17, 1954 in Cuba to Fernando and Berta Martinez, now deceased. She was trained as a general surgeon before starting her pediatric residency at Tulane in 1992. She completed her fellowship in Neonatology in the Combined Tulane-LSU program in 1998 and joined the faculty at that institution. For the past 17 years she was a valued member of the neonatal group at Tulane Medical School. Betty was a skilled clinician and an exceptionally dedicated mentor. During her time at Tulane she received numerous teaching awards. Over the last several weeks of her life she was visited by dozens of her "Tulane family." Residents, faculty and members of her institutions shared precious moments with her as she said goodbye. She remained optimistic, feisty and full of jokes and wisdom to the end. She is survived by three siblings, Angela Couret Martinez (Nilo) of Caracas, Venezuela, Marta Martinez of St. Augustine, Florida, and Dr. Fernando Martinez (Colleen) of New York; nephews, Nilo Couret, Alberto Couret, and Fernando Martinez; nieces, Elvira Padron, Margaret Martinez; as well as a great nephew, Diego Padron. No formal services are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Tulane School of Medicine (TSOM), Dept. of Pediatrics "Child Life Fund", In Memory of Dr. Betty Martinez.
