Captain Edward “Ed” Raymond Watson, 103, passed away on April 13th, 2023, in Cape Coral, FL. Ed was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He grew up with two younger siblings in a red brick row house. His father was a semi-professional baseball player. During his time working at Montgomery Ward, Ed met his late wife, Mary. They were married for 55 years.
Two months after he got married, Ed was drafted into the Army Aviation Engineer Corps. After a year, he applied for Aviation Cadet training and became a command pilot in B-17s. He was assigned to the 379th Bomb Group in Kimbolton, England, and flew 25 missions. His whole crew of 10 survived without a scratch. Ed was discharged after four years of service.
After his discharge, Ed got a job as a pilot with Eastern Airlines. He was very involved in the Airline Pilots Association Air Safety Committee during his career.
He loved traveling, reading, Big Band music and photography. His favorite sports teams were the Baltimore Orioles and the Miami Dolphins. Ed was an active member of his Lutheran church. He sang in the choir, volunteered, and taught Bible classes.
Ed is survived by his two daughters, Vanessa and Sabrina; three grandchildren; as well as three great-grandchildren.
