Dr. Carolino Aquino Centeno

March 1, 1933 — September 27, 2023

Dr. Carolino Aquino Centeno, 90, a resident of North Fort Myers for the past eleven years, formerly of Westfield, MA, passed away Wednesday, September 27, 2023 in North Fort Myers. He was born on March 1, 1933, in Lapog, Ilocos Sur, Philippines to Isaac and Asumcion Centeno, both deceased.

Carolino was of the Catholic faith. A graduate of the University of the Philippines School of Medicine, he continued his medical education and training at Harvard Medical School and Yale School of Medicine in cancer, vascular and general surgery. After his board training and board certifications, Dr Centeno settled in Westfield, MA where he served the greater community from Noble Hospital in Westfield, MA and Mercy Medical Center in Springfield, MA for 38 years.

He and first wife, Gloria (Arcellana) Centeno became US citizens in 1972 and settled in Westfield, MA with their 5 children. In 2006, after announcing his retirement and days after celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary, Gloria passed away after a car accident.

Carol or “Doc” shared a love of the outdoors with his children and friends. He was a member of the Westfield Sportsman’s Club, an avid target shooter, game hunter and an occasional fisherman on the Westfield River.  He considered himself a “gentleman farmer” where, for a period, raised Polled Hereford cattle. Carol was a self-taught pianist learning to play by ear and in doing so, made popular songs and Broadway standards part of his repertoire.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Cenciafina Centeno of North Fort Myers; five loving children from his first wife Gloria who passed away in 2006, Carolino Centeno, Jr. (Mary Jane) of Longmeadow, MA, Jose Centeno (Marites) of Westfield, MA, Dr. Galen Centeno (Jeanette) of Edison, NJ, Raphael Centeno (Su San) of Westfield, MA, and Montserrat Centeno of Holyoke, MA.

He’s also survived by five grandchildren, Nicole and husband, Henry of Brooklyn, NY; Courtney and husband, Tom of Philadelphia, PA, Amber of Boston, MA, Amanda of Edison, NJ, Gabriel of Westfield, MA; as well as five great grandchildren, Grover, Caleb, Charlotte, Eloise and Francisco. Interesting that he had five children, five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Carolino was preceded in death by eleven siblings.
