Cecil Eugene Gartrell, affectionately known as “Gene,” passed away peacefully on October 4, 2024, in Cape Coral, Florida, surrounded by his loved ones. Born on October 20, 1937, in Nashville, Tennessee, Gene was the beloved son of the late Cecil Wilson Gartrell and Mary Elma (Brannon) Gartrell. He was preceded in death by his cherished sister, Mary “Sue” (Gartrell) Frizzell, of Jacksboro, Tennessee, and his loving wife, Wilma Jean (Goodwin) Gartrell, with whom he shared 59 wonderful years of marriage. In a poignant twist of fate, Gene passed on the same day as his beloved Wilma, who died five years earlier on October 4, 2019.
Gene’s life was a testament to service, dedication, and love—whether to his country, family, or the countless lives he touched. A proud graduate of the University of Tennessee, Gene’s loyalty to the Tennessee Vols was unwavering throughout his life. His distinguished 23-year career in the U.S. Navy saw him rise to the rank of Commander, serving as a supply officer aboard the USS LaSalle and USS Gilmore, and at Naval Air Station China Lake in California. He concluded his military service as the Dean of the U.S. Army Logistics Management School at Fort Lee, Virginia. Even after his military retirement, Gene continued to contribute, working with the Virginia Power Company and sharing his wisdom with those around him.
Gene and Wilma’s love story was one of enduring devotion, a bond that lasted over five decades. He often referred to Wilma as “his swan,” a symbol of their graceful and lifelong partnership. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and companionship. After 36 years in Chester, Virginia, he moved to Florida to be closer to family.
Gene’s passion for walking became legendary, as he maintained his daily seven-mile walk, rain or shine, for over 40 years. His insatiable curiosity led him to be a lover of history, a trivia buff, and an ardent fan of Jeopardy!. An avid reader of westerns and a skilled bridge player, Gene was a man of many interests, admired by friends and family alike. He embodied a strength and fairness that made him a revered father and husband.
He is survived by his sons, David Gartrell of Santa Barbara, California, his wife Susan, and their son William; and Ryan Gartrell of Cape Coral, Florida, his wife Mandy, and their children, Nicholas, Haley, and Jordan. He also leaves behind his great-grandchildren, Gary and Wyntor, who carry forward his legacy of strength and kindness.
In honor of Gene’s life and spirit, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in his memory, a cause close to their hearts. (Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Avenue, Floor # 17, Chicago, IL 60601).
