Dennis Leroy Cunningham

Dennis Leroy Cunningham, 72, a resident of Cape Coral, FL since 2022, formerly of Northport, FL and Lee’s Summit, MO, passed away Sunday, May 21, 2023 in Cape Coral. He was born February 8, 1951 in Independence, MO.

Dennis was the second of five siblings. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jess and Beulah (Boots) Cunningham. 

Dennis was a very hard worker, and his work ethics were something to be admired. He worked at Midwest Steel for several years. When Midwest Steel went out of business, he went to work for the City of Independence sewer department. Over the years, he worked his way up to power plant operator at Independence Power and Light and worked at that capacity until he retired in 2011.  

He was extremely proud of his family and their many accomplishments and enjoyed sharing stories at the many gatherings he hosted at homes in Crystal Lakes and Lakewood. He enjoyed working in his yard and took pride in its appearance. He spent countless hours tinkering and creating miscellaneous projects around the house and in his garage. In addition to his yard work and miscellaneous projects he enjoyed taking a peaceful ride on his trike with Sara. 

After retiring, he and Sara traveled to Florida for the winters. After a few years of going back and forth from Missouri to Florida he took a leap of faith and purchased his "dream" house in Cape Coral, FL.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years, Sara Cunningham of Cape Coral; two loving children, Chad Cunningham (Terri) of Oak Grove, MO, and Jestyn Svensson (Erik) of Sweden; four siblings, Peggy Nix (Dan) of Grain Valley, MO, Barbara Poole (Doug) of Independence, MO, Patti Cunningham of Riverside, MO, and David Cunningham, also of Independence; as well as four grandchildren, Abby Cunningham, Cody Cunningham, Viktoria Svensson, and Alexander Svensson.
