Donald Jason Atkins

Donald J. Atkins, 89 years old, of N. Ft. Myers Florida, was ushered in to the presence of his precious Lord and Savior on March 14, 2025.  He was born April 11, 1935 in Sandusky Michigan to the late Jason and Luella Atkins. His surviving siblings are Phillip Atkins and Marilyn Botner.

Don’s whole world was his family. He married his high school sweetheart, Cora Jean Taylor, on October 2, 1954. They enjoyed over 70 years together. What a fun life they had! A lot of hard work went in to building their “Atkins Insurance Agency” which was established in 1966. Working side by side cemented an extra special closeness between the two of them. Many will recall they also had the Secretary of State’s Office in their home for several years as well in Michigan along with the insurance office. In 1999, the business was sold to daughter Chris and husband Paul. Later on, they sold it to brother Paul Atkins.

Don and Cora Jean have three children: Paul (Marilee) Atkins, Imlay City Michigan, Greg(Rebecca) Atkins, Kentwood Michigan,  and Chris (Paul) Stotts, Marlette Michigan.  All total, there are 11 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Quite the legacy!

Don and CoraJean built their home in N. Ft. Myers in 1996 for wintering and began full time living there in 2016. The Sabal Springs Community has been such a special place for them. Don was loved by all as he rode his bike everywhere, played tennis, visited at the pool and helped all who he could. He touched so many lives! He and Cora Jean have been very active in their N. Ft. Myers Church of the Nazarene where Don served as a board member. This fellowship has been such a blessing to our family.

Though we are completely heartbroken and will miss Don terribly, we take deep comfort in God’s word. 1 Thessalonians 4:13 reminds us that we do NOT grieve as those who do not have hope. Our assurance is strong and true. We know Don placed his faith in Jesus so, he is already walking on those streets of gold and completely healed! What a wonderful 90th birthday party he will have! Much better than the one we were planning for him!

A Celebration of Life Service will be held for Don on Thursday, March 20, 2025 at the N. Ft Myers Church of the Nazarene, 6781 Bayshore Road., N. Ft. Myers, Fl. 33917 Visitation 10-11 a.m. Service 11:00 a.m. with a lunch provided afterwards.
