Dr. John Milton Burnham lived a full life for nearly 92 years & affected the lives of many others who remember him fondly. Born in KY & raised in Manhattan, he applied his talents & education to make the world a better place. Following graduation from NYC's High School of Music & Art, John earned a BS degree in Naval Engineering from The Merchant Marine Academy at King's Point, an MS degree in Mechanical Engineering from George Washington Univ., an MBA from Florida State Univ., & a Ph. D in Bus. Adm. from the Univ. of Texas at Austin.
A Merchant Mariner, John saw the world as a cadet & as Second Mate on Texaco oil tankers before working at the US Maritime Commission & being part of the early Apollo program at Cape Kennedy. As an educator, he mentored students in Texas, Venezuela & TN. He retired from Tennessee Technical University.
John is survived by daughter, Susan Elizabeth Hughes & her family (husband, Douglas F. Hughes, son, Stephen Eric Hughes, and daughter, Amy Catherine Hughes); daughter, Leslie Ruth DiMartino & her family (husband, Fred DiMartino, and daughters Caroline Elizabeth DiMartino & Michelle Theresa DiMartino); numerous nieces, nephews & friends, including family friend, Elaine Jett; as well as life companion since 2009, Sally Sartain Jane.
He was preceded in death by wives, Marilyn Scott Burnham & Margaret Shipley Burnham; daughters, Kathy Ellen Burnham & Jennifer Ellen Norris Burnham; as well as sisters, Jill Bowser & Mary Anne Hill.
The family plans a celebration of John's life on his birthday, June 10.
