Dr. James Larry Newton, 81, a resident of Lee County, FL since the 1950's, formerly of Hickory, NC, passed away Thursday, December 7, 2017 in Fort Myers, FL. He was born September 10, 1936 in Hickory, NC to Harold and Marjorie Newton, now deceased. James was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Cape Coral. He was an educator of the early Lee County School System receiving the very first Star Award (now Golden Apple) ending his career as Dean of Basic Sciences at Edison Community College. He was a well-respected member of the community, a friend and mentor to many. He was known for introducing himself as "James L. Rootin' Tootin' Newton" but his favorite title in life was that of "Poppa" to his 6 grandchildren. He is survived by his beloved wife, Marsha Newton of North Fort Myers; four loving children, William Colen Newton (Patty) of Fort Myers, Harold Bradford Newton of Statesville, NC, Misti St. Pierre (Mike) of Cape Coral, FL and Danny Perkins (Kimberly) of Tallahassee, FL; a sister, Janice Devor of Hickory, NC; as well as six grandchildren, Devin, Jaycie, Cayson, Aubrey, Ayden and Hunter. Memorial Services will be held 3:00 PM on Monday, December 18, 2017 at Grace United Methodist Church, 13 SE 21st Place, Cape Coral, FL 33990. Memorial Contributions in memory of Dr. James Larry Newton are suggested to any charity of one's choice. Mullins Memorial Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cape Coral, is entrusted with final care.
