Jan Boyce Bates

Jan Boyce Bates, 82, a resident of Fort Myers, FL for the past 30 years, passed away Wednesday, August 23, 2023 in Fort Myers, FL. He was born March 21, 1941 in Red Bay, AL to Bennie and Maureen Bates, now deceased.

Jan was of the Methodist faith and was a Veteran of the United States Navy. He was a devoted family man who was recognized by many in the community as a true southern gentlemen. 

Following his service in the Navy, Jan found a passion for the construction business building hundreds of homes throughout Southwest Florida and Alabama.  When not working Jan was a man who enjoyed family and being on the water, and passed this love for fishing along to his four boys and many of their friends.  

He is survived by his former wife, Joan Bostwick Bates of Fort Myers; loving children, Jeffrey Bates of Portland, OR, David Bates of Jacksonville, FL, and Matthew Bates of Tampa, FL; sister, Donna Wilson of Houston, TX. 

Jan was preceded in death by his son, Jackson Thomas Bates.

Private family services will be held at the Sarasota National Cemetery.
