Jerry Harmon Leer

Dr. Jerry H. Leer, 82, a retired dentist and clinical instructor at the Indiana University School of Dentistry, passed away Saturday, March 5, 2016 in Hope Hospice, Cape Coral, FL after a battle with cancer. He cared for dental patients for 40 years in his downtown Indianapolis clinic and he was a clinical instructor for 14 years at the dental school. He is survived by his beloved and loving wife of 59 years, Frances Leer of Indianapolis; seven loving children, Kerry Tarpey of La Quinta, CA; Kathy Leer of Denver, CO; Kelly Jacobs of Wellesley, MA; Ellen Leer of Indianapolis; David Leer of Indianapolis; Jill Schneider of Excelsior, MN; Daniel Leer of Huntersville, NC, and 10 grandchildren. Jerry was a member of the Northwood Christian Church in Indianapolis where he was an elder, a Sunday school teacher and led a bible study group. He also was a member of the Cape Coral First United Methodist Church, its bible study group named in his honor several years ago, and the Cape Coral Kiwanis. He was a lifetime member and past president of the Indianapolis Highland Golf & Country Club, a 50-year member and past president of Junto of Indianapolis, and a member and past president of the Western Seniors Golf Association. Jerry also was a member and past president of the Indianapolis District Dental Society; the American and International Colleges of Dentists; the Academies of Restorative and Operative Dentists; the Indiana and American Dental Associations, and the Omicron Kappa Upsilon national dental honor society. A lifelong resident of Indianapolis, Jerry was born Dec. 14, 1933 to Harry and Mary Leer, now deceased. Jerry was pre-deceased by a sister and two brothers, Rayanna, Fred and Jack Leer. Funeral services are private. Memorial contributions in memory of Dr. Jerry H. Leer are suggested to the Indianapolis Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
