John Riley Montgomery, 87, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, June 13, 2023.
Born in Indianapolis, Indiana on October 16, 1935, he was the son of the late Genie Clemons and Margaret (Brisbin) Montgomery.
Married on July 2, 1960, to Nancy Montgomery nee Rivers, the couple would have celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary next month.
In addition to his wife, Nancy; John is survived by one daughter, Cheryl Montgomery Acevedo and her husband, Rev. Dr. Jorge A. Acevedo; two grandsons, Nathan Acevedo of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Daniel Acevedo and four great-grandchildren, Mia, Levi, Seth and Zoe Acevedo of Cape Coral, FL.
John served in the US Army for two years active duty. Upon his discharge, John filled his vacancy and continued working as an equipment specialist for the US Army installing and trouble-shooting telephone installations at military bases. He took a permanent position at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, before transferring to Lexington Army Depot for 8.5 years. Then John transferred to Naval Training Center in Orlando, FL, where he worked for the Navy negotiating the building of simulators for training Jag pilots in Miramar, California. He ended his 30+ years of service in June 1991. John and Nancy then made their home in Clermont, FL, where for 10 years, John worked for Walt Disney World in attractions at the Magic Kingdom.
In Clermont, he and Nancy were active at First UMC, Clermont volunteering on mission trips to John’s Island, helping work the monthly first Friday event, serving with the Harry Chapin food distribution, giving free oil changes for those needing assistance, as well as the handy man ministry. A final move was made to Cape Coral, FL, in 2004 to be near their daughter’s family, grandsons and great-grandchildren. John was an amazing volunteer at Grace Church in many ministries including Jerusalem Revisited and the Grace Community thrift store. He was also the neighborhood handyman wherever they lived.
John and Nancy enjoyed traveling the United States in a camper especially with their two grandsons; as well as cruising.
Memorial Services will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, July 15, 2023 at Grace Church, 13 SE 21st Place, Cape Coral, FL. 33909 with Pastor Wes Olds officiating and military honors presented.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in John’s memory may be made to Grace Church, 13 SE 21st Place, Cape Coral, FL. 33909 or to Hope Hospice, 9470 Health Park Circle, Fort Myers, FL 33908.
