Joseph Subic, Sr., 90, a resident of Cape Coral, FL since 1987, formerly of Bowling Green, OH, died on Tuesday, May 10th, 2016 at the Hope Hospice, Cape Coral. Joseph was born on February 22, 1926, in Detroit, Michigan, the same day his sister was having her 16th year old birthday party. Some 71 years later on Joseph's birthday his grandson Joseph III would be born, making it three family members born on the same day but in different years. Joseph was the last surviving child of Ivan and Eva Subic. They had three boys and three daughters.
Joseph retired from the US Army after serving over 20 years. He began his career in the military during World War II, having volunteered for the airborne. He was assigned to the 511th Parachute Infantry that was assigned to the 11th Airborne Division. Joseph made two combat parachute jumps during the war; and participated in theRaid at Los Baños prison camp in thePhilippines. It has been celebrated as one of the most successful rescue operations in modern military history. As well, he was one of the first US combat troops to arrive in Japan before the formal surrender, and he was a proud member of the Honor Guard for General McArthur's arrival.
After the war, Joseph served both in Japan and Germany on occupation duty. When he returned to the United States he was given an assignment to witness the Atomic Bomb test being conducted in the early 1950's in Nevada. Joseph's other military assignments included teaching ROTC in Detroit, Michigan in addition to serving the Military Assistance Group to Ethiopia. Upon his return from overseas Joseph had one last assignment at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri, before retiring.
In post military retirement, Joseph was an executive for the Chrysler Corporation as well as owning his own business in Bowling Green, Ohio. Later, he moved to Cape Coral FL to finally retire in 1987.
Joseph was of the Roman Catholic faith. He was active in the church, helping to establish a Knights of Columbus Council in Bowling Green, Ohio. In Cape Coral, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus at St Andrews Catholic Church. Joseph was a fourth degree Knight.
In retirement, Joseph enjoyed attending military reunions and volunteering at Cape Coral Hospital and the local VA Clinic. He was a Vice President with the 511th Parachute Infantry Association.
Joseph was married to the former Helen Chomiuk of Detroit, Michigan for 69 years. Joseph is survived by his wife, Helen; along with two sons (Joseph Jr. and John); two daughters (Jo Ann and Tanya); six grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.
