Dr. Mark Edward Mullendore, 75, of Cape Coral, FL, passed away on July 20, 2025, in the company of his wife and daughters in the canal-side home he loved.
Mark was born on May 15, 1950, in Richland Center, WI, the son of Daniel Wertz Mullendore Jr. and Norma Catherine Mullendore, née Spangler. He spent his early life in Richland Center before his family moved to Decatur, IL, during his elementary-school years. After graduating from MacArthur High School in 1968, he spent a year abroad in Hamburg, Germany, before going on to study at the University of Illinois, where he earned his B.S. in 1973 and his M.D. in 1977. Mark lived most of his adult life in Springfield, IL, where he settled shortly after medical school and began his internal-medicine practice. He practiced there until he moved to Cape Coral in 2013. Though he missed his longtime patients from the Springfield area, he loved the new challenge of being a hospitalist in Roosevelt, UT, where he worked for a few months every year until he fully retired.
Mark was many things: a lover of mischief, a seeker of knowledge, an engaging storyteller, and a hard-rules Scrabble player. He looked up to his brothers, but also never hesitated to tell them when they were full of it. And he never backed down from a lively debate—especially when he knew he was right, which, in his opinion, was often. He loved tackling woodworking projects with a quiet precision; sharing camping, canoeing, bike-riding, scuba-diving, and many other outdoor adventures with his family and friends; and traveling and exploring the world. He carried with him a sharp wit and keen curiosity, took great pride in his work, and lived his life with honesty and a full heart. He will be greatly missed.
Mark is survived by his wife, Christina McCue of Cape Coral; daughters Laura Mullendore of Denver, CO, and Danielle Rawers of Austin, TX; stepson Justin Waldron and grandchildren Zachary and Isabella of Austin, AR; stepson Jason Waldron and grandchildren Payton and Preston of Springfield, IL; nephews Marc (Mark Clymer) Mullendore of Laguna Hills, CA, and Daniel Mullendore IV of Livonia, MI; niece Anna (David) Montgomery and grandnieces Addison and Zoe of Bath, MI; numerous cousins; and, though he might roll his eyes at the mention, his loyal dog Pester.
Mark was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Daniel (Jill, née Day) Mullendore III, David Mullendore, and Michael Mullendore. Their memories—and now his—live on in the stories, laughter, and lessons shared by those who loved them.
A celebration of Mark’s life will be held on October 10, 2025, in Richland Center, where his ashes will be laid to rest next to his mother in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery.
