Martin “Marty” Lee Funkhouser, 69, a resident of Fort Myers, FL for the past five years, formerly of Tipton, IN passed away Saturday, August 5th, 2023 at his home. He was born October 13, 1953 in Christopher IL to Martin and Margaret Funkhouser, now deceased.
Marty was fiercely pro American, a long standing member of the United Auto Workers and a Veteran of the United States Navy. Marty enjoyed traveling. Some of his fondest memories were traveling the country with his Father on the semi during summer breaks from school. Marty was a baseball enthusiast, a youth baseball coach and a swimming coach to his sons and an avid fisherman. Special fishing memories included days spent with his Uncle Jim and cousin Hal on Rend Lake and fishing trips to Paris Landing with his sons. He shared a love of Civil War history with his sons. The three of them visited many Civil War battlefields together. He loved model trains and building “Lego’s” with his sons. Marty was a film critic and a lover of the classics (movies, cars, anything American made). His favorite holiday was Christmas and he was so good at wrapping presents. More important, he valued the connection between himself and his loved ones. He will be missed by those who were closest to him.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Kim Funkhouser of Fort Myers; two loving sons, Jake Funkhouser (Stephanie) of Naples, FL and Luke Funkhouser of Fort Myers; three sisters, Louise Zuza of Port Charlotte, FL, Wynette Brown (Tim) of Denison, TX and Katherine Robertson of Fort Myers, FL; sister in law, Kelly Flook (Larry) of Greentown, IN; brother in law, Kolby Dickover (Shelly) of Sharpsville, IN; two granddaughters, Addison and Kendall; as well as several nieces and nephews.
No formal services are planned at this time.
Memorial Contributions in memory of Marty are suggested to The Wounded Warrior project to support our Veterans or the American Battlefield Trust which is a charitable organization whose primary focus is in the preservation of battlefields.
Mullins Memorial Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Fort Myers, is entrusted with final care.
