Mary Ellen (Troxell) Chittum, 79, of Fort Myers, FL, and formerly of Morgantown, WV, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, in the presence of loved ones.

Born in Morgantown, WV on September 13, 1945, Mary Ellen was the daughter of Edward Roy Troxell and Mary Rose (Szarka) Troxell, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her beloved aunt, Agnes (Szarka) Propst and her uncle John Propst, as well as her Father-in-Law, George David Chittum II.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 52 years,George David Chittum III; her daughter, Erin Chittum; and her daughter’s longtime partner, Eric Kramer. She is also survived by her loving Mother-in-Law, Betty Chittum.

Beyond family, Mary Ellen cherished her many close friends, who were like family to her. Their companionship, laughter, and support brought her great joy throughout her life, and she valued those lifelong bonds deeply.

Mary Ellen graduated from Morgantown High School in 1963 and went on to earn her Bachelor’s degree in Business Education from West Virginia University in 1967.

Mary Ellen dedicated 25 years to Balfour Taylor as an office manager before retiring from West Virginia University, where she worked in the extension office as an accountant for 15 years. She was admired by colleagues for her diligence, professionalism, and warm spirit.

In her retirement, she found joy in many passions. She loved cheering on WVU sports, studying Hungarian, bird watching, and spending time with her many friends, family, and pets. Mary Ellen was also an active member of St. Therese Church in North Fort Myers, FL, where her faith and involvement were deeply valued.

A memorial mass will be held on September 19, 2025 at 11:00 am at St. Therese Catholic Church, 20115 N. Tamiami Trail, North Fort Myers, FL. Friends and loved ones are invited to attend and celebrate her life.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thanks to Hope Hospice for their compassionate care and support during this time.

Her love, faith, and laughter will remain with us always.
