Mary Jo Helfenstein

December 14, 1931 — December 1, 2024

Mary Jo Helfenstein, a 35 year resident of North Fort Myers and formerly of Milwaukee, WI, passed away at home on Sunday, December 1, 2024 at age 92. She was born December 14, 1931 in Milwaukee to Joseph and Charlotte Bergeim.

Jerry’s beautiful bride, together they created a life filled with love, travel, music, and people. These were the things that fed her soul.

During the Milwaukee phase of her life, Mary Jo was everyone’s favorite first grade teacher, a founding member of her card club, First Mate on Opus III, and consummate summer hostess to family and friends at Random Lake.  Following retirement, they made their home on the road for a decade, hiking and camping through every state and National Park, and ultimately choosing Southwest Florida to settle. Here in Fort Myers, Mary Jo delighted in singing in various groups, meeting new neighbors, volunteering with Hope Hospice, and spending time with her St. Hillary’s church family.  She continued to travel throughout the world, always savoring the anticipation of her next journey.

No matter where she landed, Mary Jo attracted new friends.  Her dazzling smile and laughter filled every room she occupied.  She loved attending gatherings and getting to know interesting people.  She had a unique and special talent for drawing them out and connecting.  She was a master correspondent and took great joy in supporting her lifelong friendships from near and far. Though she is with us no longer, we are comforted by her legacy of love.

Mary Jo is survived by three loving children, Stephen Helfenstein of New Orleans, LA, Christine Johnson (Jim) of Dubuque, IA, and Paul Helfenstein of North Fort Myers.  She dearly loved her six grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Mary Jo was preceded in death by her beloved husband and soulmate, Gerald Helfenstein, in 2014; as well as two sisters, Jeanne Henderson and Helen Westphal.
