Sandra "Sandy" Jane Mitchell

Sandra Jane Mitchell, 62, a Cape Coral, FL resident since 2014, formerly of Denver, CO passed away Thursday, September 10, 2015 in Cape Coral. She was born February 28, 1953 in Falls Church, VA to Madison and Hazel Mitchell, now deceased. Sandy was known for helping out animals and humans alike if they were in need. She worked tirelessly with the Evergreen Animal Protective League in Colorado, fostering dogs (and keeping a few), placing dogs with new owners, and finding dogs who were wandering the streets of Colorado in need of help. She, likewise, helped countless people who needed an ear or assistance of any kind, including many of her students. Ever since High School, Sandy knew she wanted to be a Physical Education teacher and she followed that dream throughout her adult life. She taught in both the Hagerstown, MD as well as the Denver, CO public school systems for 38 years. She helped out countless students during that time and was loved by all. She had been retired just over a year and was excited to have moved to sunny Florida to be near her sister since they had talked about living near one another their whole adult lives. Sandy was always active but especially loved having all the newly found free time that retirement afforded her to play golf more often, work in her lawn and garden as well as around the house, and to walk several miles a day. She will be missed by countless number of people whose paths she crossed. She is survived by her husband of 10 years, Stuart McDonald of Cape Coral; a brother, Peter E. Mitchell and wife Wendy of Denver; a sister, Linda M. Gendron and husband Donald of Cape Coral; two nephews, Geoffrey and Joshua; one niece, Shoni; one great niece, Courtney; one great nephew, Gavin; as well as Audrey, Ester C and Koshi the dogs. No formal services are planned at this time.
