William Locke Carter

September 21, 1929 — December 9, 2024

William Locke Carter, 95, a resident of Cape Coral, formerly of Pine Island and Des Moines, IO, passed away Monday, December 9, 2024 in Punta Gorda.  He was born September 21, 1929 in Perdue Hill, AL to Locke and Maggie Carter, now deceased.

William was a member of Pine Island Methodist Church.  Many happy hours were spent by Carol and Bill on Pine Island.  Retiring there was an outlet for his love of fishing and boating. Bill left high school early to join the Marines and he held a lifelong allegiance to the Corp. Finishing high school, Bill and Carol met; fell in love and got married.  On to six years at Auburn University where he earned a degree in Veterinary Medicine.  After a several years of enjoying small and large animal practice, Dr. Carter signed on as an inspector in a poultry plant and - over a lifetime - worked his way to Acting Director for the Midwest Region of the US Department of Meat and Poultry inspection.

During the last twenty years, Bill has worked as a volunteer teaching computer classes for the Lee County hospital; working the VA Hospital front desk and driving carts; and working the polls for voting.

Bill is remembered as a kind and honorable gentleman who never wished malice towards anyone.  He always had a funny story and everyone loved to laugh with him.  Bill had a rare quality in that folks just wanted to be a better person from being around him.

He is survived by his two loving children, William “Mike” Carter (Stevie) of Aurora, CO and Dona Marie Carter of Cape Coral, FL; one sister, Lurline Steiner of Huntsville, AL; three grandchildren, Adam, Tara and Christopher; two great grandchildren, Landon and Luke; one niece, Marcia as well as two nephews, Billy and Larry.

William was preceded in death by his wife, Carol Carter.
