Laurel “Chap” Raymond Chapman, Jr.

With heavy hearts but joyful memories, we celebrate Laurel “Chap” Raymond Chapman, Jr., 92, a resident of N. Ft. Myers for 37 years, formerly of Naperville, Illinois, and originally from Ottawa, Illinois, who passed away Friday, January 13, 2023, in Cape Coral.  He was born October 8, 1930, in Bloomington, IL, to Laurel, Sr. and Ethel Collins Chapman, now deceased.  

He was an electrical engineer (part of the team that invented the electric garage door opener and has a patent in the HVAC industry), entrepreneur, noted motivational speaker for Dale Carnegie, and a part of the Chapman Realty team. 

He was known for his hearty laugh and easy sense of humor. He loved to play Rook with his family and shoot the moon! He regaled his children with his personal rendition of the Chiquita Banana song late into their adulthood, always making them laugh. 

A devout religious icon in the Nazarene church, he loved to sing inspirational songs and lead Bible study classes. Everyone who knew him loved him. 

He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Dorothy Chapman of N. Ft. Myers; four loving children, Clifford Chapman (Debra) of Bolingbrook, IL, Douglas Chapman (Vivian) of Little Elm, TX, Sandra Chapman, of N. Ft. Myers, and Cynthia Walch of N. Ft. Myers; one sister, Lois Chapman of Bonita Springs; two brothers, Edward Chapman (Christine) of IL and Lloyd Chapman (Diane) of IL; as well as one grandchild, Rachel Swanson (Ian) of IL; great grandchild, Fiona, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Chap was preceded in death by a son, Mark Chapman; brother, Robert Chapman, and a sister, Esther Baxter.  

Memorial Services will be held at 3:00 PM on March 4, 2023 at the North Fort Myers Church of the Nazarene, 6781 Bayshore Rd, North Fort Myers, FL 33917, with Pastor Van Garner officiating. It will be live-streamed and available for replay at https://youtube.com/@thevanzone27
