Sheryl Renee Veenstra Bazuin, 70, a seasonal resident of Cape Coral, FL since 2021, passed away Tuesday, January 21, 2025 in Cape Coral. A resident of Grand Haven, MI, she was born December 8, 1954 in Grand Rapids, MI to Dr. Bernard Veenstra and Lois Veenstra.
Sherry’s greatest joy was guiding her children into adults who love God and shine a bright light full of love on those they encounter. Her only prayer when she was diagnosed with cancer was to be able to see her children graduate from high school. She was granted those plus more to revel in watching them find loving partners and growing their families. She loved being Oma to her grandchildren, encouraging and challenging them to care and love others as Jesus would.
Sherry attended Covenant Life Church in Grand Haven, MI where she served in various care ministries and was on the church council. She worked a variety of part time jobs. She used these jobs to build numerous relationships many of which continued after the jobs were done. She was honored by the opportunity to care for her grandfather in her home in the waning years of his life. This lead to her becoming an activities director at a local nursing home where she built relationships with both the patients and the staff. In all her interactions she showed graciousness and openness in ways that people felt enriched by the interactions with her.
Sherry always loved books. Which inspired her to own a used book store. Here she was able to mix her passions of people and books. She made friends with her customers and they would have great conversations about books and life.
Sherry’s other passion was travel. She was always thankful of George’s teaching career because it allowed the family to take extended vacations. Her travels have taken her through much of the US and Canada, 3 trips to Europe, 5 weeks in Colombia to adopt Elita and a year in the Dominican Republic as a missionary.
Sherry fought through major health issues for the last 40 years. She is a cancer survivor who always fought hard to beat it and its long-lasting effects. However, no matter what was going on, she cared for and guided others who faced hardship or tragedy, especially those who felt like outcasts. Through all this she persisted.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 49 years, George Bazuin; two loving children, Geoffrey Bazuin (Rachel) of Cedar Grove, WI, and Estrellita Bazuin (Tim) of Grand Haven, MI; stepmother, Janice Veenstra of Holland, MI; one sister, Judy Brown of Bushnell, FL; brothers, David (Cindi) of Kalamazoo, MI, and Craig (Nancy) of Savannah, GA; as well as five grandchildren, Connor, Anabella, Kjirsten, Isaac, and Micah. She is proceeded in death by her parents Dr. Bernard and Lois Veenstra.
A Celebration of life will be held at Covenant Life Church in Grand Haven, MI at 11AM on Saturday, February 1, 2025 with an hour of visitation prior to the service. Video of the service will be made available to those who cannot attend.
